Room in 3 bedroom 1 bath West Oakland house
(Near Peralta/West Grand)
Available January 1, 2013 Available for viewing now.

Move in is $550; first month’s rent of $350 plus a $200 deposit.
** More photos coming soon!
Our front bedroom rents for $350 month plus utilities which are usually split 5 ways (water, power and internet). These utilities tend to fluctuate from $0-$60 each a month. (Yes, I said zero) We have a basement space that when regularly rented, defrays our utility bill by $200.
The 10'X13' room has windows that face the front porch and side of the house and hardwood floors. Even though it is right by the front door, it is probably the most private bedroom in the house because it is closet to the living room which doesn't get used a great deal. It is painted a nice dark slate blue. Our landlady might be open to you changing the color. The room is cheaper than the others because it has no closet. It is a sweet little room.
Despite it's cozy dimensions, the current housemate has managed to get quite a lot of furniture into his room. He's managed a bed, side table, a desk, a clothes rack, 2 dressers & a recliner chair! If you were creative with your furnishings or got a loft bed you could create more useable space!
*The current tenant is very tidy, but FYI: has a cat and is also a smoker. The room shouldn’t smell like smoke though. He has been really great about smoking outside.
There is the possibility of using a small portion of the basement for storage or work area purposes.

How We Roll & What We'd Like in a Housemate

We would like to find:
We do burn candles (responsibly) and use incense. If you are scent or smoke sensitive it might be a problem. If you have dust or cat allergies it might be a problem.
We have one kitty and though we might consider it, we think it would be a bad idea to add another. There’s been an uneasy truce with the two cats here currently. This is definitely not a good house for a dog. There is a possibility we might be open to another type of pet.
We are really easy to get along with, courteous and open. We aren't neat freaks, but we like to keep the kitchen and bath pleasant for all. We don’t care about your gender or sexual proclivities, eating preferences (we are all omnivores), aesthetic tastes, spiritual beliefs, etc.
If you have an odd schedule we don’t care because we all sleep, eat, come and go at different times. This is a fairly quiet-zen house, but music or laughter does sometimes get turned up. We socialize sporadically, but we don’t feel the need to do everything together. It’s a good social balance right now.
We usually take turns or chip in toward cleaning supplies and toilet paper. We generally don’t share food, except some staples, but often one of us will cook and share. We've had issues in the past with people over-using condiments or mooching food without asking or replacing. We have some common dishes, others we are a little territorial about. We tend to clean up after ourselves and then rotate things like bathroom and kitchen cleaning. Good communication works. :-) We try not to over consume household basics and we are mindful of our energy use. We also try to recycle and compost as much as possible. Our small trash can is good incentive for us to do that.
- Someone responsible and considerate who has reliable income.
- We would prefer a non smoker. If you smoke you'll need to do it outside.
- We aren't drug users here, but you should not be 420 Un-Friendly (I can explain in private).
- We’d like someone who doesn't use alcohol or drugs excessively!
- We’d like you to be easy going, have good communication skills and a sense of humor.
- We’d like to find someone who is generally tidy and cleans up after themselves in common areas.
- Have friends or a significant other? Guests are fine, we all have them from time to time. Please be considerate about it.
- Since the room we are looking to fill is right by the front door it may disturb you if you are a light sleeper.
- You need to be cat friendly, Pagan friendly (respectful of house altars) and open minded!

Ze House

This is a small funky, somewhat shabby single story 1908 Edwardian house that is not quite a bungalow. It has 7 rooms and with the exception of the ugly vinyl flooring in the kitchen and bath, hardwood floors throughout. Two of the bedrooms are original, the third bedroom is an add on that was once a porch or a mud room. It has a lot of Craftsman Bungalow features. The house feels like it should have a fireplace, but it doesn't. There is an attic that none of us have dared explore. It is not finished with floors or anything.
Things are mostly furnished so there’s not room for a lot of furniture, art or mass amounts of extra dishes rom a new housemate. The house has a good vibe and gets nice light. There is a front living room and a “dining room” which is being used as an office and sometimes as a craft room.
We have one bath with a tub/shower. It is shared with the three of us that live in the house, our basement renter, our landlady and occasional guests. Despite so many people sharing the bathroom we rarely have log jams. We all have very different schedules. We have a blue Magic 8 Ball gnome in our bathroom.
The kitchen is a decent size. It has a wonderful old Wedgewood gas stove. There’s a microwave, coffeemaker, toaster, toaster oven and a few other kitchen appliances we share. We wash our dishes the old fashioned way!
We don’t have a washer or dryer but there is a laundromat within walking distance.
The partially finished basement runs the length of the house and is used for some storage, a small rented living space and also sometimes our landlady does art or streams music from down there with guest DJ’s. This can be loud, but in the past they have been receptive if we have a need for quiet. It usually happens on occasional Weds eves.
We have a cute back yard & garden in progress. Our landlady lives in a cottage at the back of the property. Sometimes we have an RV or bus parked in the driveway and sometimes a tenant lives in it. He's pretty chill and doesn't spend much time in the house when he's home. There are lots of little rehab projects around here if you are handy and that kind of thing excites you.
Street parking is generally very easy. No off street parking right now. We've never had any of our vehicles messed with on the street. There is only one neighbor who asks us not to park in front of her house, for safety, because she comes home late at night.
We are about 9 blocks from West Oakland BART. This is considered a "high crime" area but our block is pretty mellow. By Car, we are super close to Emeryville so Trader Joes and Target are not far away. We are a couple of minutes away from all the freeways and the Bay Bridge. Sometimes late at night you can hear the train or the foghorn. Nights are pretty quiet around here!

The current residents:

Nichoel is a quick witted artist and seamstress who performs with the Steampunk Group The Aether Brigade. She belly dances, plays with fire and makes amazing hats!
Lorelei is a singer and artist. She has a pet-sitting/home organizing business and also tends bar for several Goth Clubs and private events. Her insomnia often has her up late cooking. She is a Pagan priestess.
Lorelei and Nichoel are into a wide variety of types of art music and media. Both are Doctor Who fans. One day the fridge may finally be decorated to look like the Tardis! Care to conspire with us on that? Don't be surprised if Nichoel "Gobbles" at you or you hear us exchanging sound effect greetings.
Our resident indoor only cat, Li Li , a tortoiseshell rules the house and "that is all." She'll be shy with you at first then she will charm you and make you her slave. Resistance is futile!
James is just about to move into our basement. He’s a talented DJ, writer , and we hear, a fantastic cook.
Our landlady, Banzai, is quite colorful. She is into Feng Shui and Chinese medicine. She has her own little house and these days we mostly only see her when she comes into the main house for baths.
Questions? Want to see the room? Send Lorelei an email. Tell us a little about yourself.
