Oh Internet! Is there anything you can't do?
About a year or so ago I blogged about finally finding a music video that I remembered from my childhood where some one-hit wonder covered 'Runaway' while being backed by a stop-motion dinosaur band. I was so excited to finally find the video because nobody else remembered it and I had become certain I must have imagined it. Well, the experience just happened again.
Back when I was thirteen, there was this song that I always heard on the radio that I was reallyreally into. For some reason I thought it was 'Information Society', and since I also liked 'Pure Energy' and 'Walking Away', I went out and got the Information Society album.
Actually, I think I had my friend Micha make me a dubbed tape with his dual cassette deck boom-box. See, kids? Music piracy has been going on forever!
In any case, while I loved the Information Society album, that elusive song was not on it, most notably because it was not, in fact, Information Society. I spent a couple of years periodically asking my more musically-knowledgeable friends and occasionally trying to sing it to them ("It has really bad orchestra hits! And they kinda go 'da-da-da-da-dadada-da-DA! And this guy sings most of it, but then this girl sings for a bit.'). It was to no avail. People would just stare at me blankly before saying, 'Stop singing at me. And put your pants back on, this is a public library for heaven's sake!'
At last, the mystery was solved this afternoon when the tune in question was played on Live 365. A nineteen-year quest for knowledge has finally come to an end.
So what was the aforementioned song? Apparently, it was 'I Beg Your Pardon' by Kon Kan (Wait?Who? Who the hell was Kon Kan?)
From this discovery we can discern that thirteen-year-old Dave must have been deaf as a post, as not only is the song of dubious taste, but it doesn't really sound all that much like 'Information Society' at all. I guess the music and sampling are kinda similar, but the guy's voice doesn't sound anything like Kurt's. He certainly didn't have Kurt's fan-fucking-tastic style, which influenced many of my clothing decisions for a number of years.
Actually, the song's not nearly as good as I remember it. Forget my earlier praise, I hate you, internet. By solving this mystery, you have tarnished a fond childhood memory. I shan't forget this slight!
