Well, folks, congratulate me; I've survived my first bicycle accident. It was bound to to happen sometime. I'm only surprised it didn't happen sooner.
Yesterday afternoon I was pedaling around the financial district, when a car tried to cut ahead of me, almost hitting me. I swerved to avoid it, my tire got caught in the streetcar tracks, and my bike screeched to a halt... I, unfortunately, didn't, and I went careening off of my bike into the street.
I fractured some ribs, banged up my shoulder and elbow, and there's a deep chunk that was carved out of my knee. Thankfully, I was wearing my helmet, so my head is unharmed despite the fact that it bounced against the pavement.
You know what came out completely unscathed? My good ol' trusty Schwinn bicycle. That, my friends, is why I bought a big, hulking behemoth of a beach cruiser instead of a slick, skinny hipster bike.
Mayhap it's just because of the Vicoden, but I actually feel okay today, despite the fact that I was warned that I would wake up in agony this morning. I was also given a sling, which I was told wasn'treally necessary, but would make the healing of my arm and shoulder more comfortable, and would probably help prevent me from over-using it.
Oddly, I found the experience of going to the Emergency Room strangely fascinating. I've never really hurt myself before, it was an entirely new experience for me. I think Eva was a bit perturbed by the fact that I seemed to be enjoying myself... weeeeall, aside from the wincing pain bit, of course.
The important thing is, I'm okay... Almost as importantly, it happened on a work errand, so the Company is footing the bill for everything. Sweet, sweet worker's compensation!
