I was delighted by my recent visit with friends to LoBot gallery in Oakland. LowBot invites young artists to be in residence for a month or two, show and sell their work. This summer's artist is Sophia Pousson, a multimedia artist, recent graduate of The Maryland Institute College of Art and new resident of Oakland, California. She delighted us with her grotesque yet whimsical creations and interactive sculptures.

Interactive works are always a true pleasure for me and my inner-child!

I set aside my fear of heights and climbed up into Leo, a tree house, sans tree, shaped like a lion. (A "cat house!") Climb up a steep ladder and into a delightful secret clubhouse where the walls are covered in chalkboard paint and a box of colored chalk awaits. There are also handy erasers so that the graffiti can constantly change.

Venus Rose drew a beautiful Oshun Veve on one wall and I could not resist writing the word, "Absolutely" and putting a few symbols of my own about the space. I drew my sigil for Pandora and a golden apple inscribed with, Kallisti! Perhaps they are still there or perhaps they have been erased and some new scribble has replaced them!

Along with the interactive sculptures, T-Shirts and small works on paper were available."The Collector" bought several small of these small creatures, a sheepish creature with a long toothy smile and a corkscrew body named, "Matt," a wire-haired creature with a low squat body reminiscent of a Dachshund but with a giraffish neck named, "Jared" and a small colorful creature who looked very crabby. I have nicknamed this piece, "Meh!"

Some of these creatures are a marvelous conglomeration of recognizable species and body parts and others are just cheerful blobs!

The works were very affordable. Some were as inexpensive as $20!
